Wall Street indexes closed higher on Thursday after a series of losses, offering some positive cues to Asian markets.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Holidays in China and South Korea kept trading volumes muted on Friday.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Focus was now on key&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/www.investing.com\/economic-calendar\/pce-price-index-906\">U.S. personal consumption data<\/a>&#8211; the Federal Reserve\u2019s preferred inflation gauge- after hawkish signals from the central bank battered markets over the past week.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Hong Kong stocks surge from 10-mth low amid bargain hunting&nbsp;<\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p>Hong Kong\u2019s&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/www.investing.com\/indices\/hang-sen-40\">Hang Seng<\/a>&nbsp;was the biggest benefactor of bargain hunting, rallying 2.1% as it rebounded from a 10-month low.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Heavyweight technology stocks were among the key drivers of the rebound, with&nbsp;Baidu Inc (NASDAQ:<a href=\"https:\/\/www.investing.com\/equities\/baidu.com\">BIDU<\/a>) (HK:<a href=\"https:\/\/www.investing.com\/equities\/baidu\">9888<\/a>),&nbsp;Alibaba&nbsp;Group Holding Ltd (HK:<a href=\"https:\/\/www.investing.com\/equities\/alibaba-group-holding-hk\">9988<\/a>) (NYSE:<a href=\"https:\/\/www.investing.com\/equities\/alibaba\">BABA<\/a>) and Tencent Holdings Ltd (HK:<a href=\"https:\/\/www.investing.com\/equities\/tencent-holdings-hk\">0700<\/a>)- the big three tech stocks of China- up between 1.7% and 3%.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Investors piled into heavily discounted Chinese stocks in hopes that the economy will receive a much-needed boost from the week-long mid-Autumn festival holiday, which begins today.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Hotel and department store operator New World Development Co Ltd (HK:<a href=\"https:\/\/www.investing.com\/equities\/new-world-dev\">0017<\/a>) jumped 4% in Hong Kong trade, while videogame developer NetEase&nbsp;Inc (HK:<a href=\"https:\/\/www.investing.com\/equities\/netease-inc\">9999<\/a>) surged 4.8%.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Growing concerns over slowing Chinese growth and a property market crash drove steep losses in the Hang Seng over the past month. The index was trading down 3.5% for September.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Asian stocks set for steep losses in September&nbsp;<\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p>Broader Asian markets were largely muted, but were mostly headed for steep losses in September. Hawkish signals from the Federal Reserve, a spike in oil prices and a sharp sell-off in the global bond market rattled sentiment towards risk-driven markets.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Worsening sentiment towards China also rattled local stocks, as fears of a property market crash surged after embattled developer China&nbsp;Evergrande&nbsp;Group (HK:<a href=\"https:\/\/www.investing.com\/equities\/evergrande\">3333<\/a>) suspended all planned debt issuances due to a government investigation.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>China\u2019s&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/www.investing.com\/indices\/csi300\">Shanghai Shenzhen CSI 300<\/a>&nbsp;and&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/www.investing.com\/indices\/shanghai-composite\">Shanghai Composite<\/a>&nbsp;indexes, which did not trade on Friday, lost more than 1% each for September.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Australia\u2019s&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/www.investing.com\/indices\/aus-200\">ASX 200<\/a>&nbsp;rose 0.4% on Friday, but was down nearly 3.5% for September, hit chiefly by concerns over China.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Japan\u2019s&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/www.investing.com\/indices\/japan-ni225\">Nikkei 225<\/a>&nbsp;was flat on Friday, while the broader&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/www.investing.com\/indices\/topix\">TOPIX<\/a>&nbsp;fell 0.9%. Both indexes were down between 1.8% and 2.2% for September, as they retreated from over 30-year highs.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Data on Friday painted a mixed picture of the Japanese economy.&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/www.investing.com\/economic-calendar\/tokyo-core-cpi-328\">Inflation in Tokyo<\/a>&nbsp;grew less than expected in September, while&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/www.investing.com\/economic-calendar\/unemployment-rate-298\">unemployment<\/a>&nbsp;unexpectedly rose in August.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>But Japanese&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/www.investing.com\/economic-calendar\/industrial-production-159\">industrial production<\/a>&nbsp;did not contract as expected in August, while&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/www.investing.com\/economic-calendar\/retail-sales-261\">retail sales<\/a>&nbsp;grew more than expected.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>India\u2019s&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/www.investing.com\/indices\/s-p-cnx-nifty\">Nifty 50<\/a>&nbsp;and&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/www.investing.com\/indices\/sensex\">BSE Sensex 30<\/a>&nbsp;indexes were the few outperformers for September, and were set to add more than 1% each after clocking record highs earlier in the month.
