But the outlook for the yen remained muted, following dovish signals from the Bank of Japan on tightening monetary policy.<\/p>\r\n\r\n\r\n\r\n<p>The\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.investing.com\/currencies\/usd-krw\">South Korean won<\/a>\u00a0added 0.3%, recovering slightly after tumbling to a five-month low in April, while the\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.investing.com\/currencies\/usd-sgd\">Singapore dollar<\/a>\u00a0added 0.1%.<\/p>\r\n\r\n\r\n\r\n<p>The\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.investing.com\/currencies\/aud-usd\">Australian dollar<\/a>\u00a0rose 0.1%, extending gains after the Reserve Bank unexpectedly\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.investing.com\/economic-calendar\/rba-interest-rate-decision-171\">hiked interest rates<\/a>\u00a0on Tuesday and signaled more tightening to curb\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.investing.com\/economic-calendar\/cpi-1011\">high inflation<\/a>. Slightly stronger-than-expected\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.investing.com\/economic-calendar\/retail-sales-262\">retail sales<\/a>\u00a0data on Wednesday also showed some resilience in the Australian economy, which gives the RBA more headroom to hike rates.<\/p>\r\n\r\n\r\n\r\n<p>The\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.investing.com\/currencies\/usd-thb\">Thai baht<\/a>\u00a0rose 0.1% even as data showed\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.investing.com\/economic-calendar\/cpi-800\">consumer inflation<\/a>\u00a0eased more than expected in April, which likely necessitates a less hawkish stance from the country\u2019s central bank.<\/p>\r\n\r\n\r\n\r\n<p>The\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.investing.com\/currencies\/usd-cnh\">offshore yuan<\/a>\u00a0moved little after logging wild swings this week, but was still trading near a two-month low after data showed that a post-COVID economic rebound in China was running out of steam.<\/p>\r\n\r\n\r\n\r\n<p>Br\u043eader Asian currencies edged higher, while the dollar fell slightly against a basket of currencies, as markets awaited the conclusion of a two-day Fed meeting later in the day.<\/p>\r\n\r\n\r\n\r\n<p>The\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.investing.com\/indices\/usdollar\">dollar index<\/a>\u00a0and\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.investing.com\/currencies\/us-dollar-index\">dollar index futures<\/a>\u00a0fell about 0.2% each.<\/p>\r\n\r\n\r\n\r\n<p>While the Fed is widely expected to\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.investing.com\/economic-calendar\/fed-interest-rate-decision-168\">hike interest rates by 25 basis points<\/a>, markets are split over whether the central bank will announce a pause in its rate hike cycle.<\/p>\r\n\r\n\r\n\r\n<p>While a brewing banking crisis and worsening economic conditions could push the Fed into announcing a pause,\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.investing.com\/academy\/trading\/inflation-definition\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">inflation<\/a>\u00a0still remains well above the central bank\u2019s target range, which could attract more monetary tightening measures.<\/p>\r\n\r\n\r\n\r\n<p>Comments from\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.investing.com\/economic-calendar\/fomc-press-conference-1692\">Fed Chair Jerome Powell<\/a>\u00a0will be closely watched for more cues on monetary policy.<\/p>\r\n\r\n\r\n\r\n<p>A hawkish outlook from the Fed could potentially spur more weakness in Asian currencies, which were battered by rising interest rates through 2022.
